Get To Know Selkie
Introducing Selkie, a new Collection by Kimberley Gordon,
Co-Founder & Former Creative Director of WILDFOX
Selkie is a fun spirited, feminine brand comprised of unique T shirts, Sweatsuits and dresses made from deliciously soft fabrics. Selkie is conscious of it's ethical responsibilities, it's environmental sustainability, and it's employment of diversity within fashion. Selkie is committed to feminism and will eventually showcase small charity collections, donating proceeds to important causes such as homeless girls and women, animal rights, and environmental protection.
The Story of Selkie
"As a young girl growing up in the UK and then in Santa Barbara, I fell in love with folklore. My love of make believe has infiltrated my work and play for as long as I can remember and ultimately helped inspire my previous clothing line, WILDFOX. Now, at 34 and beginning my next venture I can see so much irony in my love of fantasy and fairy tales. I built a strong passion for feminism as I learned so much about women and battled against the odds in my last company, and now feel the stories I was told as a little girl hindered my understanding of the real world and the hardships of being a woman! I am compelled to re work my understanding of these fantasy stories and have even gone as far as to name my new clothing line after my favorite childhood folklore. The Selkie.
In Irish, Scottish, Icelandic and Scandinavian folklore, the selkie is a woman of the ocean who lives inside a seal skin. When she comes up to the rocks she slips out of her skin to bask in the sun. If a man is able to steal her skin while she sleeps, she is forced to become his wife and live on land. But, if the selkie finds her skin again, she transforms back into her true form and immediately returns to the sea, free. The tale begins with sadness and entrapment, an innocent girl is forced into a world she cannot escape, until, of course, she re discovers her true self. The metaphor is not lost on me. As an adult it means so much more to me now, I feel this is the perfect representation of girlhood to womanhood, especially in today's climate, escaping the hands of “Man” who’s grip has been so relentless over hundreds of decades.
This collection is not just an expression of my heart, it is a moving force within me. I felt it from my last few years at Wildfox, scratching to get out. A need to showcase my true fascination and love for women. A need to be part of a change in fashion. While a lot of brands are finally showcasing different sized women and diverse ethnicities, not a lot of brands or stores are expanding their sizing. The silent fat shaming women feel in dressing rooms when sizes don’t go above an 8 is enough to bring them to tears. Sizing must change, and we must accept the that we are responsible for encouraging women to love themselves by providing clothing that fits, at the very least by offering them the sizes of the average American women.
I want girls and women to see their own beauty does not rely on their size or skin tone, it comes from within. It comes from intelligence, humor, compassion and confidence. I want to show women they can be the heroine of their own fairy tale, the lead in their own movie. Worthy of love, pride, respect and self exploration.
Selkie is inspired by these women, maybe they are free, maybe they’ve lost their way, but in the hopes that someday soon they will re discover their own skin.
Selkie is inspired by feminism, art, literature, and women’s progress throughout the years. The celebration of style and art of the 1600’s, the repression and difficult breakthrough of the 60’s, the movement and flow of the 70’s, the vibrance and cheerfulness of the 80’s, the power and change of the 90’s, and the new woman today!"
